Whale Watching In Kaikoura

14, June 2009 By Danny

Today we headed for Kaikoura, we made pretty good time, and we headed straight for the information center which I always enjoy. We asked about whale watching and as it turned out there was only one company doing it so the choice was much easier to make. It was $140 each to do it I thought it was a pretty good price for 3.5hrs on a boat Jane took a bit of convincing.

We headed straight for the Whale site and gathered in the lobby watching a program on whales. We were told that the sea was rough and that there was a high chance of seasickness. Jane instantly went green I was not that bothered and thought I had great seaworthy legs!!

We got on the boat and headed out to sea, OH BOY!! was it rough the cattermerang was being tossed around, and people all around us were feeling sick Jane was too. I was ok, but I was concentrating on the horizon. After about 30 minutes we stopped and waited, and in the distance, we were told there was a sperm whale the cattermerang raced over to the sperm whale.

The boat was rocking all over the place, and a lot of people were blowing their dinner into the bags provided. I was still ok, and Jane was still too green!

We saw our first sperm whale it was huge and I managed to film it after a few minutes it did the tail thing which was pretty cool. By now we were all ready to start heading back, but obviously, we stayed around waiting for another one to come to the surface, in fact, we saw two more sperm whales which was awesome and the mood of the boat changed people stopped being sick and I was feeling ok Jane still green!!

On the way back to the harbour the land on my side of the boat disappeared, and I was suddenly feeling very rough, my head was spinning and I wanted to be sick I gagged and heaved and grabbed a bag luckily I didn’t yak up but boy it was close. We stopped to see some seals and to be honest no one really cared, and so we headed back to the dock.

Everybody was glad to be off that boat, and when we got into the car we just sat there thanking god that we were on dry land again!!

We headed back to the hostel still feeling green, and we just laid on the bed trying to re organise our stomachs into something a little more comfortable. I decided to get fish and chips, and they were lovely!! Loads of chips and big blue cod… perfect.
