Sand Duning In Cape Reinga

3, July 2009 By Danny

We get up really early today and head for Cape Reinga I was so excited about today because we were going to go sand duning this was going to be awesome!! I was driving a little faster than usual today as I wanted to get to the sand dunes as quick as possible – like a kid at Christmas!!

We get to the dunes and boy these were big I have never seen anything like it!! The first dunes we climbed up were tough on the old leg you have to use your hands as well to get up!! Jane decided that maybe we should try some smaller dunes first to get the hang of it!!

We find some smaller dunes, and after I had a couple of attempts, I had it sussed I was running and jumping onto my body board and going like the clappers.

It was so much fun and a real adrenalin rush.

Jane, however, thought it would be best just to lay down at the top of the dune and just hope that gravity would do its thing…. didn’t work for her and after a lot of coaching and persuasion I managed to get her to do it and boy she went soooo slow down the dune it was quite funny…lol, She enjoyed herself though!!

The trouble with sand duning as its great fun going down but when you are at the bottom you need to get back up again, and this was tiring, to say the least!! I was exhausted!!

We decided it was time to hit the big ones and well this was fun!! The first attempt I did I ran jumped landed and flew about halfway down the dune then the board started to turn then it was game over. I was now cartwheeling down the dunes. Yes it hurt however as soon as I managed to locate all my major limbs and I was running back up to the top to have another go!!

Now it was Janes turn she decided to go the slow route I have never heard Jane scream so loud she suddenly realised that this was a lot of fun!! So after many trips up and down and I had a few nasty spills as always trying to go faster and I also found a bit on the dune where I could get a little bit of air while going down …. so much fun!! We decided that almost 4hrs was quite enough!! We had sand burns everywhere, and yet it didn’t matter one bit!!

On the way home from the sand dunes we drive to Spirits Bay which is lovely coastline and the sand is not sand its lots of tiny broken shells that the light catches it is really beautiful!!

We have a long arse drive back to, and when we do finally arrive at our hostel we head straight for the showers and remove sand from all sorts of places. Its not a nice thing but the day was probably one of the most exciting days we have had in New Zealand other than bungee Jumping!!
