Off To Betty & Rustys – Sonoran Desert

3, May 2009 By Danny

This is a long arse drive to Betty and Rusty’s in the Sonoran Desert where there are cactus and real cowboys. The cactus here in the Sonoran desert can only be found here in the world, and they are huge!!

When we get to Betty and Rusty’s we are shocked at how simple their lives are, there is no electric no running water as such, and they are completely happy with their way of life. Rusty is 90 odd years old and a real cowboy he has about 60 grandchildren and is exactly how you would imagine a cowboy to look.

We set up our tents and decided to head for a lake, I know I lake in the desert, but they said there was one. We walked down the road a bit and were told to follow the wash this would lead you to the lake after 30 minutes of walking we were looking doubtful that there was a lake in the desert then I realised that just around the next corner there was the lake….. Perfect!!

Swimming was insane, and we were very grateful that the water was warm and very refreshing.

This was soon becoming a very strange day for everybody. We explored the grounds where Betty and Rusty live and saw the pot-bellied pig and there large collection of horses that The Danish boys will be riding the following morning. Meanwhile, the girls are cooking dinner, and Mike is preparing a birthday cake on the fire for Niels.

We all sat down and started drinking, I was on bourbon whiskey now, and Jane was throwing the vodkas back (no change there) and well the party just carried on into the night. We ate the chocolate cake that was cooked on an open fire, and we all got very drunk and managed to find our beds just!!
